"I’m a misogynist. I’m a black man who likes to think of himself as a feminist. I’m a progressive. I’m gay."

"Hopefully, I’m a relatively decent guy; I certainly mean well. Still, I’m also a misogynist. How could I not be?"

So begins Kai Wright in "The Misogynist Within/Sexual harassment expresses power dynamics from which all men benefit" at The Nation.

I wonder if John Calvin knew how much mind rot was at the bottom of that barrel he opened in 1540.

Women aren't good at identifying who's a friend and who's not.

So misogyny gets inserted into strange narratives.

OK professor, put down the keyboard and step away from the screen before someone gets hurt. This has gone on long enough.

This man seems to want to beat himself up. If so, I prefer he'd do it in the privacy of his own home. But really, in actuality, he wants to beat all the rest of us up, doesn't he? He's a misogynist because society made him one. That is I, You, and They made him one. It's the old Officer Krupke routine once again. "We're down on our knees, 'cauz no one wants a fella with a social disease."

I read that three times and still don't know what the hell that means. He hates women? He's a black man who is progressive, gay, and a feminist. Okay then.

I'll try my hand at the same thing.

I'm a man.

Enough said.

I don't have time to read his article, so I will ask those of you who have. Is he saying he's a misogynist because he's a man or because he is a gay man?

He's refreshingly insightful and honest!

I’m a black man

His struggles in Trump's Racist America made him strong and wise!

who likes to think of himself as a feminist. I’m a progressive.

He's good-hearted!

I’m gay.

He's intersectional!

I should congratulate the guy on being "a black man" (probably mulatto, since he brought it up) and writing an article on something other than how terrible it is to be black.

But I won't because he gratuitously mentioned his race in the second sentence.

I don’t know. #BLAMEALLMEN? Sexual harassment seems to be a behavior that many asshole men cover for by declaring themselves pro-choice, liberals, and champions of women’s rights. I can see why the public revelation of this little gambit used by amoral cads (cough, cough Bill Clinton) is an embarrassment to liberals. Many of us men have no understanding of why anybody would even do it. But obviously women have a wider experience of different kinds of men. But I guess this means that if these men are such a pox on women-kind, maybe it is they who need to suffer for it, not the rest of us.

Another idea might be maybe that women might examine why so many of them are attracted to loud-mouthed jerks, increasing the incidence of said jerks in the human race. There is another useless project for you, let’s blame all women too.

BTW, the only men in my actual experience who have experienced unwanted sexual come-ons when they were younger and more powerless, experienced them at the hands of gay men. So maybe before he speaks for half the human race, he should examine his own cohort.

It’s sort of funny that men who empirically study and experiment with the process of getting laid, with successful insertion of their penis into an actual vagina the only criteria of success, and who are quite willing to use whatever tactics work the best, find that being what many of us would call “a jerk” works the best, in terms of numbers.

Generally, an article like that is intended as bait for the resistance womyn so that he can get laid. Laslo Spatula (I miss the guy!!) guided us through this with the help of The Clean College Chick With The Hot Nose Ring and Herpes.

But but but this clown is gay. So I’m missing his purpose.

I don't know about that. It always comes out "Drink more Ovaltine" when I use mine.

Doesn't this imply that women are also misogynists, or that there are in fact innate differences between men and women?

Exactly. PUAs are attacked for their tactics, but they are only doing what works. If being woke and a nice guy got you laid more often, the PUAs would be woke and nice guys.

But you can't mention this because it violates rule #1: Women must never be made to feel bad about, or responsible for, anything.

"Women still make roughly 80 cents on the dollar that’s paid to men." --> BUT it's not for the same work, or even the same amount of work. This may be the most dishonest statistic on the planet, yet it is seemingly immortal. If the author doesn't know or care about what's wrong with it, why should I read the (obviously dishonest) author?

"It’s the case for families: Single mother remains a casual, if coded, slur ..." --> Yes, most of understand that stuff happens. BUT, there's overwhelming evidence that, in the aggregate, children with resident fathers have better life outcomes than those without. And then we have yet another single-mother-by-choice who just doesn't care about that, because (whatever). So why, exactly, is it such a bad idea to express social disapproval for those who make this choice- because mommy's feelings might be hurt?

"America is rooted in misogyny, and thus so am I. I have spent most of my adult life trying to acknowledge these facts and correct the way they shape my own behavior. --> So buy yourself a whip already, and go flagellate yourself in public. What, you say it's not you you wish to take a whip to??

"Masculinity operates like whiteness: It demands control over any space it enters." --> But you're not a bigot, no,no, not you. It's just, how dare a man act masculine (let alone assume a masculine identity), and how could one not be deeply ashamed with having been born white?

I think he's just a joiner. He wants to be part of any group he hears about. He's probably a Communist and a Rotarian, too.

"As is often the case, I only made contact with the problem when I felt how much I’ve also been hurt by a society built to diminish women. "

I look forward to his piece about Sheila Jackson Lee.

Again..pretty efficient:
Progressives wrestled with representational politics in 2016. We fought mightily over what, if anything, the fact of Hillary Clinton’s gender should have meant for voters. Trump’s voters were clear what his gender meant for them. It meant a reassertion of patriarchy. It was morning in America for the white man: Grab ’em by the pussy and give a rebel yell.

Some Christians (including Martin Luther) whip themselves to demonstrate their piety and to overcome their sinful nature -- even though they believe they were born sinful.

Plus ça change.
