So much boob today.

Groucho was a genius. I read once that he was the audience at a magician's vaudeville show. He was called up to the stage by the magician who didn't recognize him. I think he had shaved off his mustache. The magician had put something in his mouth and asked the audience member to look inside and tell if he saw it.

When he asked the person to say what he saw, Groucho said "Pyorrhea" and brought the house down.

Margaret Dumont doesn't get enough credit. She was the perfect straight lady for Groucho. She was quite successful before she teamed up with the Marx brothers.

David B rocks.

The other day he tweeted about the modern leftwing college experience:

College: We're all about taking you out of your comfort zone.
Also College: Report feelings of discomfort to the Campus Discomfort Police.

Clay Travis said he had two principles (our at least things he believed in). And the CNN host/snowflake was shocked!

But good old Grouicho had it right, "Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others."

Yes, they were perfectly matched for comedy. Loved, loved, loved Groucho!

We're playing by your rules now, cock holster.

Now go run and clutch your pearls, Margaret.

"I remember when conservatives thought that decorum was important. But now yahoos rule the right."

-- It is something I predicted when common decency from McCain/Romney were spat on from the left, and Bush's attempts at compromise and gentlemanliness failed to achieve political middle ground with the left. After 16-ish political years of me saying, "No guys, if we're just a bit nicer, keep our nose clean and work with the left, we'll get results," and all that happens is Obama makes fun of McCain's war injuries and Romney gets called a heartless bastard, then, well -- do you think people on the right are going to KEEP listening when I say, "No, trust me! This time being decent and decorous will work to our advantage."

Matt Sablan said...

Also, wasn't there an entire narrative arc earlier this year about how Democrats were "going blue in more ways than one" to try and show how hip and cool they were because they could say fuck?

Matt Sablan said...

Which I guess is to say: Culture, as a whole, has been getting coarser, so I can't fault Republicans for going with what works.

Hence, you get Trump.

Hypocrite Now I Know isn't offended by "dirty words" (and boob isn't a dirty word). He,she, it, or xer just wants the left to be able to spew whatever they want, while the Republicans play by Marquis of Queensberry rules.

Now I Know can stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

OK, looks like the subject today is boob.

Did you know that boob spelled backwards is dood?

My mom wanted me to pee before the long car ride, and I said: "I already dood it!"

You mean the mirror image.

"Boobs dood" is not a palindrome.

Margaret Dumont knew what she was doing. She considered herself a great straight woman.

The cultural differences here are interesting.
The statement would have been considered odd at worst in other countries (being off-topic), but not insulting or lacking decorum, as such. This is a highly parochial matter (that of taking offense) in the US, and its parochialism should itself be a cause for embarassment.

The French label all sorts of things "les mamelles" including official names for places, and at least one political unit (in the Seychelles, or was it Reunion?).

In the Philippines "suso" is used entirely casually, and there are at least five mountains or hills named "Susong Dalaga" - Mount Maidens Breast.

Lefties have always believed that "yahoos rule the right" despite all evidence to the contrary. But it makes no sense to be nice to lefties -- they have come to expect it, but will never respect it.

I look forward to remembering the day when conservatives finally wised up and stopped giving the time of day to dirtbag lefty's reeking bad faith priss-potting about "what conservatives used to think was important".

CNN is vying for the title of boob bait for babies.

"I remember when conservatives thought that decorum was important. But now yahoos rule the right."

Sacrifice three babies at Planned Parenthood, deny character diversity (i.e. individual), embrace color diversity (i.e. collective), and purchase indulgences from the DNC.

I like that conservatives/libertarians are now the mischievous cool kids with a sense of humor, and the lefty progressives are the humorless, saturnine, easily offended, everything is problematic, blowhards who are always getting their panties in a twist over the least micro-aggression. You think that the left is going to remain attractive to teens? I'm more skeptical.

One of my favorite Margaret Dumont scenes: Unaided the Marx have defeated the invading Sylvanian army and captured their nefarious leader, Trintino. Mrs. Teasdale greets the victory by singing the Freedonian national anthem, "Hail! Hail, Freedonia, land of the brave and..." She can't get out the last word because Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo have taken to pelting her unmercifully with tomatoes. Good, we all say, stupid song stupidly yodeled.

I've often wondered if Miss Dumont knew what her fate was to be that day on the set.

Surely you embarrassed yourself writing that, so let me thank you for degrading yourself to the level of rude, ungrateful guest, all for our American benefit, at the cost of potentially infinite opportunities for all those un-American people you chose not to offer guidance to/ward.

Please know I am embarrassed to point out to you you ought be embarrassed by your pessimism, as you are seemingly unaware that it is because you are gently dying, as are we all but you and some here much more quickly so, you therefore see America dying, and you will see death all around you wherever you flee to whenever you get off the pot and go instead of wasting time writing about why you feel the flee need.

It would be interesting for you to use that vast brain of yours to consider all the smart people of years past who foretold of America's impending doom and why they were mistaken, as that might ease the mistaken burden driving you to a potentially self-fulfilling permenant depression state, a state any figures of the past you admire upon viewing y/our quality of life would scoff at.

Us Americans know enough to Buck Up, and that is a hell of a lot.

My favorite exchange, from "A Night at the Opera", as Marx & Dumont are walking up the gangplank to the ship:

Mrs Claypool: Are you sure you have everything, Otis?

Otis B. Driftwood: Well, I haven't had any complaints yet.

THe photograph shows that we may not have changed all that much. During her Festivus "Airing of Grievances" tour, Hillary Clinton told us that women (white women in particular) failed to vote for her because they were too weak-minded to resist instructions from the men in their lives. Hillary also told us that she was frozen with indecision during a debate when Trump invaded her personal space (it never happened but for present purposes, we'll let it go).

So according to Hillary Clinton, nothing has changed since Groucho Marx. Women are weak and show fragility around men. Interesting. Complete nonsense but interesting.

Big Mike said...

@cronus, Hillary doesn't get that she was hit with payback for the treatment Sarah Palin got at the hands of Hillary's allies eight years previously. Takes a lot chutzpah to slam Palin for being the "not our kind, dear" type of woman, then say that there's "a special place in Hell" for a woman who doesn't vote for a woman.

Big Mike said...

@Michael K, my favorite Groucho story has him puttering around in his garden in old clothes and a beat up hat. A well dressed woman drives up in an expensive car. She rolls down the window and asks "My dear sir, what do you charge for your services?"

Without batting an eye Groucho responds "The pay isn't much, but the lady of the House lets me sleep with her."

So, Althouse, now you know why Meade is always working out in the front yard. Some day, some woman is going to mistake him for your gardener and ask that question!

Shane said...

A perfect summation. Thank you for sharing this Iowahawk, which I had previously missed. Groucho. Margaret Dumont. Iowahoawk. Althouse. My day is about complete. Precisely why I read, and as important financially support your great efforts! Thank you.

Once in an interview, Groucho was asked about Margaret Dumont and he replied that she was the perfect actress for the part because that's exactly what she was like in real life.

rcocean said...

Groucho could be a dick at times. In the Cavett interviews, he dismisses Dumont and stupidly says she didn't understand the jokes and thought all the Marx movies were serious.

Which of course is ridiculous. Dumont was a comedic actress AND a straight man before she hooked up with the Marx brothers and continued on doing it after the Marx brothers pictures.

Big Mike, wasn't the "special place in hell" thing pushed by Madeleine Albright, the lady who, along with Hillary's husband, first sent nuke technology to the Norks? Not that the original purveyor of such swill is that important.

Big Mike said...

It was, indeed, though the detestable James Earl Carter claims credit for inserting himself into the process and -- to hear him tell it -- preventing Billy-Jeff Clinton from sending our nuclear technology to North Korea via ICBM nosecones.
